EU COnference on border controls
The FPS Environment organized a conference on official controls for IAS at the border in March 2024 in the framework of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU. The event was supported by the European Commission and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Officers from customs, animal and plant health authorities, and environmental authorities from 18 Member States convened in Brussels for a one day event focusing on improving border controls for IAS. The discussions led to the identification of challenges and needs at all stages of the control process and the definition of five main priorities for a better implementation of Article 15 - i.e. more effective border controls. NSSIAS was in charge of developing the plenary session at which it also presented the Belgian approach of supporting inspection services for their controls. Additionally, the NSSIAS supported the IUCN in setting the framework for the breakout sessions.
